Beneath the surface

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” ~ Matthew 13:44

A man by the name of Father Juan Solana felt drawn to the testimony of Mary Magdalene and so he became a priest and was assigned to serve in the Holy Land. When he got there, he realized that he couldn’t find anything that honored this woman of God in Israel and so he was inspired to purchase land and built a spiritual retreat for pilgrims to experience Jesus’s ministry and have a life changing experience. In order to build anything in Israel you have to carry out mandatory archaeological tests because the Holy Land is such a sacred place.

And so in carrying out their tests, they came upon a miracle find that would change Father Solana's life. After not getting more than a foot deep, they found the only 1st century synagogue on the sea of Galilee and the city of Magdala. This synagogue is one of only seven synagogues from this time period in all of Israel. What does that mean and why is it significant? It’s significant because in that synagogue was found a minted coin which proved that Jesus preached in this synagogue. But what was even more amazing about this archaeological find was that the excavators did not expect to find this treasure. As a matter of fact, they stated that they were only digging there as a precaution as they had made arrangements to go and dig elsewhere, another place they thought treasure would be found.

In our scripture focus, we see that the Kingdom of God is likened to hidden treasure however, when the treasure of the Kingdom is found, the one who finds it will give everything to own it. This is a different kind of treasure than that which was found in Magdala by Father Solana. You see Father Solana wanted to build a place which would create a life changing experience for Christians. I would like to declare to you that the one who finds what’s hidden beneath the surface in Matthew 13:44, finds a treasure and a joy that transforms to a degree that you would do anything to own the whole field. Daughter’s, this treasure is Jesus Christ. He is the treasure of the Kingdom and His desire is to know and be known by His beloved daughters intimately. He has come to give us new life, he has come to fill us with His peace and His joy. He has given us His spirit and once we allow Him, He will do a deep work within us to bind up our wounds and our brokenness. God loves His daughters. The eternal life being offered to us in this magnificent kingdom is more about a person than it is about a place. We see this in John 17:3:

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” NKJV

I encourage you beloved daughters of the King, go deeper beneath the surface and do not be afraid. A beautiful treasure awaits you.

*Prayer*

Dear Heavenly Father, I know that I have held back from opening my whole heart to you. I have been afraid to go deeper with you because of past hurts, rejection, pain, bitterness and even unforgiveness. Help me Lord to yield to your Holy Spirit. I know that you want to go beneath the surface, to heal old wounds and to take me to a deeper place in you. Today I choose to walk in my deliverance and say no more to the enemy. I happily surrender the hidden places of my heart and I run to your feet. I choose to receive your love today Abba and I rest in it today. In Jesus Name. Amen!
